You can reward your dog with snacks and treats for a range of different things; the most common being a behaviour or command that you are trying to teach them or they already know and you would like to reinforce.
Typically, dogs are also rewarded when they avoid doing something they shouldn’t, such as barking at another dog whilst on a walk, ripping up shoes and clothing, or not digging holes in the garden…although, most people find a furry excavator cute.
When rewarding your dog, ensure that the treat is given immediately (within a couple of seconds of doing the preferred action/behaviour) as your dog needs to know what they are specifically being rewarded for, otherwise it can get a bit confusing if the reward is given after a longer period of time.
Sometimes, dog training can be quite hard work and mentally draining for you and your pooch; if this is the case then it could be worth getting in touch with a local reputable dog trainer to see if they can help create a remedy to the teaching process between you and your dog.
